It immediately became an oppidum of Rome. The town is mentioned also by Sallustio, who tells of the battle of 62 AD in which Catiline lost his life. During the times of the Mediceo Grand Duchy, Pistoia was an important political junction and even culturally clubs and Academies were founded; the most important was the Academy degli Risvegliati (Of the Reawakened) founded by Monsignor Felice Cancellieri and nobleman Federigo Manni where they recited poems, poetry and prose and made music. The reunions took place mainly in the halls of the noble houses and were for their exclusive use and entertainment. At the end of the XVII century a theatre was built where the Academy had its seat until its extinction in the last century. Numerous members of the local nobility took part in it, including Felice Cancellieri, Roberto Rospigliosi, Vincenzo Manni, Annibale Bracciolini, Domenico Manni, among others. The town was elevated to the state of Province in 1927.

The council of Pistoia is among the cities decorated for Military Valour for the War of Liberation because it was given the Silver Medal for Military Valour for the sacrifices of its population and for its activity in the partisan struggle during the Second World War. The council of Pistoia is crossed by many water courses, none of which however is of large dimensions and all are characterised by being torrential. The main one of these is the Ombrone Pistoiese that flows in the west of the city. Reaching the San Biagio district, the Ombrone Pistoiese has clean and clear waters, even able to host precious water species such as the fario trout, the telestes and the European bullhead. Nevertheless, its flow (sometimes exceptional in the cold months) suffers drastic decreases in summer, caused especially by indiscriminate withdrawals for agricultural reasons, so the stream can sometimes remain dry even for months, with grave damage to the water fauna. Another important water course is the Brana stream that circles the city walls to the north-east. Also in this case the stream reaches the city gates with a decent flow and fairly good quality waters.

Nevertheless, when it reaches the industrial zone of Sant’Agostino, the Brana suffers considerable pollution of various types, slightly mitigated by a depuration installation near the Armacani hamlet. The Bure stream is sourced in the Acquifredola knoll in two branches, that run down the valleys of Santo Moro and of Baggio to reunite near Candeglia; it continues to the north of Pistoia to flow into the Agna stream. Other less important water courses are: the Rio Diecine, an affluent of the Brana near the cemeteries; the Vincio di Montagnana, that flows into the Ombrone Pistoiese at Pontelungo; the Vincio di Brandeglio, this also an affluent of the main Pistoia water course near the hamlet of Gello. Unfortunately, these last small streams also suffer from the water withdrawals by plant breeding companies and, therefore, the final stage of their journey is pretty much deprived of life.
